Dr Vicki Harman

Vicki is a Reader in Sociology at the University of Surrey. Her research interests center around family life, gender, food practices, social inequalities and social identities (particularly gender, social class and ethnicity). Vicki’s current projects include ‘Doing Porridge: Understanding women’s experiences of food in prison’ which is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and ‘Food, families and visiting rooms in a women’s prison’ which is funded by the British Academy. Vicki is passionate about using mixed qualitative research methods including ethnography, interviews, focus groups and creative and visual approaches. Recent projects have included using art workshops with female survivors of domestic violence. Vicki is programme director for BSc Sociology at the University of Surrey and Co-Director of Centre for Research in Ageing and Generations.
As part of the project, Vicki is exploring the experiences of transnational families, (im)mobilities, consumption practices and identity.
